1.Project Overview
Situated in a renovated historic building in Copenhagen’s trendy Nørrebro district, this restaurant embraces the essence of “New Nordic” design. The interior features exposed raw brick walls, warm oak wood slat ceilings, and a massive 5-meter communal dining table. The client wanted a lighting solution that would define the communal space and provide a warm, inviting glow during the long, dark Scandinavian winters, without cluttering the minimalist aesthetic.
2.The Challenge
The project demanded a delicate balance between function and form:
Lighting a Long Table: A single central chandelier would leave the ends of the long table in darkness, while a row of individual pendants felt too rigid and canteen-like. The challenge was to light the entire length of the table evenly but artistically.
Visual Lightness: With the heavy visual weight of the brick walls and the solid wooden table, the lighting fixture needed to feel airy and weightless to prevent the room from feeling oppressive.
The “Hygge” Factor: In Danish culture, lighting is emotional. It must be warm, glare-free, and intimate. Harsh spotlights were out of the question; the light needed to feel like candlelight or floating fireflies.
3.The Tikanna Solution
We created the “Floating Dewdrops” system, a linear suspension installation customized to the exact length of the table:
Matrix Suspension System: We designed a slim, white rectangular canopy that blends into the ceiling structure. From this, over 60 individual glass orbs are suspended on ultra-thin, barely visible wires. This creates a “cloud” of light that seems to float magically.
Hand-Blown Borosilicate Glass: Each sphere is made from high-clarity borosilicate glass with a subtle “bubble” texture inside. This texture catches the light and creates a sparkling effect without blocking the view through the windows.
Randomized Heights: Instead of hanging them in a straight line, we calculated a randomized wave pattern for the drop heights. This introduces an organic rhythm to the space, softening the hard lines of the brick and wood.
4.The Result
The installation has become the heart of the restaurant. Passersby on the street are drawn in by the warm, glittering display visible through the large windows. The client reports that the communal table is now the most popular spot, with strangers often striking up conversations under the cozy canopy of lights. It is a perfect example of Tikanna’s ability to create “emotional lighting.”
